Hope College Women’s Basketball Triumphs in Tight Matchup
The Hope College women’s basketball team, nationally ranked, demonstrated resilience in a thrilling match against the University of Wisconsin-LaCrosse, securing a 68-65 victory at DeVos Fieldhouse.
With standout performances from players like Terin Maynard applying aggressive defense and Leah Richards delivering a critical block in the final moments, the Flying Dutch overcame their opponent’s fierce challenge.
Following a tough overtime loss to Carroll University in their previous game, the Flying Dutch (4-2) were determined to avoid back-to-back defeats, which haven’t occurred since the 2016-17 season.
Head Coach Brian Morehouse reflected on the team’s growth and readiness to compete. “We experienced a sense of déjà vu during the game. However, I felt more equipped to guide them this time around,” he stated.
“I provided them with effective strategies, and they executed well under pressure. Our veteran players, including seniors and juniors, stepped up during critical moments, illustrating their experience,” Morehouse added.
Wisconsin-LaCrosse initially threatened to alter the course of the game, but thanks to a key pair of free throws from senior guard Jada Garner, the Flying Dutch built a late lead of 68-58. However, turnovers allowed their opponents a chance to claw back within reach.
In a tense finish, Maynard’s defensive prowess prevented the opposing point guard from making a play, and Richards’ timely block thwarted a potential game-tying three-pointer.
Freshman sensation Anna Richards shone brightly, scoring a game-high 18 points with an impressive shooting performance, making 70% of her attempts. Several teammates contributed, with Garner, senior Olivia Bellows, and junior Sydney Vis each chipping in nine points.
In addition, Leah Richards played a vital role with eight points, alongside teammates including senior Courtney Lee, who also showcased her skills on the boards with eight rebounds.
Wisconsin-LaCrosse’s Lauryn Milne led her team’s scoring efforts with 16 points, including four successful three-pointers.
Looking ahead, the Flying Dutch are set to face off against the University of Wisconsin-River Falls on Saturday, November 30, at 3 PM.
