Fordham Women’s Basketball Dominates LIU with a 62-43 Victory
NEW YORK – Fordham University women’s basketball took charge early and showcased an impressive defensive effort, triumphing over LIU with a score of 62-43 on Sunday at the Rose Hill Gym. This victory marks the Rams’ fourth consecutive win.
Once again, the Rams demonstrated their strength under the basket, outscoring the Sharks 36-12 in points in the paint. With a current record of 6-3, Fordham is enthusiastic as it approaches the conclusion of its non-conference schedule this month.
Taylor Donaldson led the team with 14 points and three steals, while Karissa Antoine made a significant contribution with a personal best of 10 points and a team-high eight rebounds, alongside two blocks. Meanwhile, Rose Nelson also recorded two blocks, and Irene Murua finished with nine points, shooting 4-of-7 from the field. Chae Harris added eight points and contributed two steals.
With a total of 12 Rams participating in the game, every player contributed to the team’s effort, as 10 of them scored at least one basket. Noteworthy is that the Rams held LIU to just 43 points, the least allowed to any opponent this season, marking the seventh time they have restricted an opponent under 60 points.
Right from the outset, the Maroon and White set the tone defensively, limiting LIU to 28.0% shooting from the field. Fordham jumped ahead 9-4 early on and capped a 7-0 run at the end of the first quarter, closing the period with an 18-12 lead.
The second quarter continued to showcase Fordham’s defensive prowess, as they allowed only seven points. They ended the half with a six-point surge, leading to a score of 30-19 at halftime.
During the first half, Antoine was a standout performer, shooting a perfect 5-of-5 for 10 points, while Donaldson led the scoring charts with 11 points, making up the majority of the team’s efforts in the first half.
As the second half began, LIU aimed to narrow the deficit, prompting a timeout from Fordham when they trimmed the lead back to seven. Just after the timeout, Donaldson hit a three-pointer, restoring a double-digit lead for the Rams that they would maintain for the rest of the game.
Fordham’s lead grew to 17 points by the end of the third quarter, which marked their largest margin of the night, and they continued to secure their advantage into the fourth. By the closing moments, they had established a 20-point lead, comfortably finishing the game and solidifying their fourth consecutive win as they look forward to a break before the final stretch of non-conference play.
The Rams will enjoy a 13-day hiatus before resuming competition with back-to-back games on December 21-22 at the Raising the B.A.R. Invitational, hosted by Cal in Berkeley, California. In their first encounter, they will face the host Bears, followed by a match-up against either Temple or Xavier the next evening.
