In a competitive non-conference matchup, the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros women’s basketball team faced a significant defeat against the tenth-ranked Texas Christian University (TCU) Horned Frogs, ending with a score of 93–57 at Schollmaier Arena.
Game Highlights
Freshman forward Chazlyn Dettor marked a milestone in her collegiate career, leading the Vaqueros (3-3) with a personal record of 17 points in her inaugural start. She contributed four rebounds to her team’s efforts, supported by junior guard Erin Maguire, who added 14 points and five assists. Additionally, sophomore guard Kayla Lorenz registered 10 points along with two assists.
TCU’s Stellar Performance
On the opposing side, TCU improved their undefeated record to 6-0 as four players reached double figures in scoring. Marta Suarez spearheaded the offense with 24 points, 10 rebounds, and five assists, while Olivia Miles closely followed with 22 points, 8 rebounds, and 7 assists. Taylor Bigby chipped in with 12 points, and Donovyn Hunter added 11 points. Both Suarez and Miles exhibited impressive shooting skills, each achieving 56% from the field, with Suarez hitting six of her ten attempts from three-point range.
Game Progression
The Horned Frogs set the pace early in the game, launching an 18-0 scoring run before Maguire finally put points on the board for UTRGV. The Vaqueros made a notable comeback with Elizabeth Romer sinking back-to-back three-pointers, subsequently followed by Lorenz’s own three, narrowing the score to 22-11.
Despite the initial struggles, UTRGV rallied in the second quarter, initiating an 18-9 run that brought them within six points at 39-33 before TCU responded with a 7-0 run to close out the half.
In the third quarter, Dettor’s back-to-back baskets once again cut the deficit to single digits at 55-46. However, TCU shifted momentum back in their favor with a decisive 14-0 run to end the quarter.
The final quarter saw UTRGV scoring only 11 points while TCU surged ahead with a commanding 24-11 performance. Dettor was instrumental in the fourth, scoring six of the Vaqueros’ 11 points.
Looking Ahead
After this challenging encounter, UTRGV will shift their focus to their upcoming game, where they will open Southland Conference play against Lamar on Tuesday, December 2, at 6:30 p.m.
