Evan Dando: Reflections on Influential Women in His Life
Evan Dando, celebrated as the lead singer of the Lemonheads, is now 58 and looking back at the key women who have shaped his life. In this introspective piece, he shares experiences from his tumultuous first marriage and reveals how he has found enduring love with a woman he originally dated 28 years ago.
Women Who Shaped His Early Years
Dando reminisces about the impactful women in his ancestry. His maternal grandmother, Hazel, emigrated from Sweden to the United States, where she was known for her passionate beach outings and lively spirit. She passed away in 2000, leaving behind fond memories of her vibrant personality.
On his paternal side, Margaret “Peg” Dando was an accomplished artist who lived to 104, passing in 2015. She influenced Dando’s artistic inclinations and provided a strong foundation through her conservative values and healthy lifestyle.
His mother, Susan, served as a notable fashion model featured in Vogue Italia, who began her modeling career after becoming a mother. At 86, she continues to exude beauty and vitality, with a principled stance against promoting cigarettes in advertising.
Family Life and Personal Relationships
Dando reflects on his parents’ dynamic relationship, noting how his mother, the attractive art teacher at Alfred University, caught the attention of his father, Jeffrey. Their separation during Dando’s childhood instigated many of his creative expressions, leading him to write a song titled “Confetti.” He recalls his mother’s adventurous spirit, as she often took him and his sister, Holly, on various excursions instead of sending them away to camp.
His sister Holly, who accompanied Dando during his early touring days, eventually distanced herself from the music scene to pursue a fulfilling career in social work. Dando candidly acknowledges the turbulent phases in their sibling relationship amidst his personal struggles.
Reflections on Love and Relationships
I’ve had my share of dalliances – it was fun. Sometimes it was only about sex, and sometimes about the companionship of a woman.
Throughout his years in music, Dando experienced various romantic entanglements, all underscoring the intersection of personal connection and the life of a touring musician. His journey led him back to a woman he had once dated briefly—a relationship that has now blossomed into something lasting and meaningful.
