First Conference for Women Peacekeepers from the Global South
The inaugural Conference for Women Peacekeepers from the Global South will take place on February 24-25, 2025, at the Manekshaw Centre in New Delhi, as announced by the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA).
Collaborative Organization for Gender Inclusivity
This significant event is being organized by the Ministry of External Affairs in partnership with the Ministry of Defence and the Centre for United Nations Peacekeeping (CUNPK). This initiative exemplifies India’s commitment to promoting gender inclusivity within peacekeeping missions, establishing itself as a leading voice for the Global South.
Gathering of Influential Leaders
The conference will convene women peacekeeping officials representing 35 prominent Troop Contributing Countries (TCCs) from the Global South, along with senior policymakers from the United Nations and esteemed peacekeeping experts, as noted by the MEA.
Inspiring Keynote Address
The opening session will feature a keynote address from External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, accompanied by distinguished speakers including Tanmaya Lal, Secretary (West), Lt. Gen. NS Raja Subramani, Vice Chief of Army Staff, and Lt. Gen. Rakesh Kapoor, Deputy Chief of Army Staff.

In his opening remarks, Minister Jaishankar emphasized India’s dedication to aiding Global South nations in enhancing their peacekeeping capabilities: “Through initiatives led by the Centre for UN Peacekeeping, we will continue to provide training programs specifically tailored for women peacekeepers, reinforcing our earlier efforts with ASEAN countries in 2023.”

Reflecting the philosophy of “Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam”—which translates to “the world is one family”—India reiterates its journey toward global peace. The nation acknowledges the vital roles that women peacekeepers play as embodiments of peace, leadership, and inspiration for future generations.

India’s foreign policy is anchored in dialogue, diplomacy, and collaboration. Minister Jaishankar stated, “Guided by our philosophy, we will keep contributing to UN peacekeeping efforts significantly.”

The conference’s concluding session will feature Valedictory Address by Sanjay Seth, Rajya Raksha Mantri, alongside remarks from USG Jean-Pierre Lacroix and Secretary (West).
Throughout the conference, participants will have the honor of meeting President Droupadi Murmu.

Representatives from the United Nations, including Jean-Pierre Lacroix, UN Under Secretary General for Peace Operations, and Christian Saunders, UN Special Coordinator, will also be present.

Long-standing Commitment to Peacekeeping
India has played a significant role in UN peacekeeping for over seventy years, contributing nearly 300,000 troops to more than 50 missions since the 1950s and currently deploying over 5,000 troops in nine of the eleven active missions. The country has the highest record of sacrifices with 180 peacekeepers lost in the line of duty.
Key Initiatives and Contributions
India’s initiatives include support for peacekeeper safety, donation of 200,000 COVID-19 vaccine doses, and the introduction of UNSC Resolution 2589 on “Protecting the Protectors.” The nation also developed the UNITE AWARE platform to enhance the safety and security of peacekeepers.
Advancing Gender Inclusivity
As a leader in deploying women peacekeepers, India has made notable contributions such as deploying the first all-women Formed Police Unit to a UN mission in 2007, reflecting its commitment to gender inclusivity in operations. Today, India boasts 154 women uniformed personnel in peacekeeping missions, with Female Engagement Teams active in various conflict zones.

Notable accolades include Major Suman Gawani and Major Radhika Sen receiving the UN Military Gender Advocate of the Year Award, highlighting India’s dedication to gender-sensitive peacekeeping training for women from ASEAN countries.
