This month marks a significant milestone for millions of college graduates as they prepare to receive their degrees. Commencement ceremonies will be filled with inspirational speeches that aim to empower these students to navigate the challenges ahead. Notably, women are becoming increasingly prominent in higher education, surpassing their male counterparts. In 2024, there were approximately 2.4 million more women enrolled in colleges than men, with graduation rates standing at 66% for women compared to 58% for men.

The paths these graduates will take post-commencement will undoubtedly differ. While some are entering the workforce with job offers aligned with their studies, others are exploring further academic pursuits such as Master’s, PhDs, or JDs. Additionally, a segment may still be contemplating their next steps.

In terms of career aspirations, major fields of interest include:

  • Business (24%)
  • Healthcare (18%)
  • Technology (18%)

Recent graduates are prioritizing job opportunities that offer competitive salaries, flexible work arrangements, supportive environments, and a better work-life balance. Interestingly, the title insurance sector, while not the most glamorous option, aligns well with these preferences and presents significant opportunities, particularly for women.

The title insurance industry boasts a robust economic impact, contributing $30 billion to the gross domestic product (GDP) and generating 155,000 jobs in 2022. Moreover, it indirectly supports an additional 231,000 jobs and $19 billion in wages and benefits, significantly impacting the economy through the procurement of goods and services.

Women play a vital role in this sector, representing over 70% of the workforce. This industry is particularly favorable for those with entrepreneurial aspirations, as small businesses constitute 90% of the sector. While title insurance may lack the allure of Silicon Valley tech firms or Wall Street hedge funds, the work is profoundly impactful—facilitating homeownership and protecting property rights against potential disputes, such as fraud or tax liens. The absence of title insurance could result in devastating financial consequences for homeowners, making the role of title insurance professionals crucial.

Acquiring a home is a pivotal achievement for many Americans, often being the most significant financial transaction in their lives. Title insurance professionals are privileged to support this process, offering protection and assistance with integrity and dedication.

Despite the advances women have made in various sectors, challenges remain. A report from McKinsey & Company titled *Women in the Workplace 2024: The 10th-anniversary report* highlights that, even though women’s representation in corporate management has improved—with women holding 29% of C-Suite roles, up from 17% in 2015—opportunities for advancement remain sluggish, especially at entry-level and managerial positions.

Once a male-dominated field, the title insurance industry is witnessing a transformation, with women steadily rising through the ranks. A notable example is Cara Detring, who broke barriers as ALTA’s first female president, followed by leaders like Anne Anastasi, Diane Evans, Cynthia Durham Blair, and Mary O’Donnell. Currently, women hold three positions on ALTA’s Board, including Lisa Steele, Deborah Bailey, and Mary Thomas.

As the CEO of the American Land Title Association, I am proud to advocate for this talented workforce and look forward to supporting the next generation of women in title insurance—many of whom will walk across the commencement stage this spring.

Diane Tomb is the Chief Executive Officer of the American Land Title Association.
