Women Health Workers in Nagpur Demand Wage Increase

Nagpur: Since July 1, women workers employed as attendants at primary health centers throughout the state have been engaging in an indefinite strike. Their primary demand is for an increase in their current honorarium of Rs 3,000.

Protest Developments

As the strike marked its 50th day, approximately 200 women gathered at Samvidhan Chowk in Nagpur to voice their concerns. The protest culminated in the submission of a memorandum to the Zilla Parishad CEO, Vinayak Muni, which was directed to the state health minister.

Leadership and Participation

The demonstration was spearheaded by notable figures such as Mangala Meshram and Vitthal Junghare. Other participants included Vandana Gadge, Minakshi Kapse, Jyoti Vinchurkar, Sulochana Mamurkar, Geeta Moraskar, Sangita Korde, and Jija Kolhankar, who all played pivotal roles in the day’s activities.

Context and Significance

This protest reflects broader concerns regarding the financial treatment of health workers, especially women who make up a significant portion of the workforce at these facilities. The ongoing strike emphasizes the vital need for adequate compensation in the healthcare sector, where workers often face challenging conditions.

Future Actions

As the situation develops, the health workers remain resolute. The next steps will be crucial in addressing their demands and ensuring better support for those who provide essential health services to the community.
