The Call to Conserve Our Glaciers
The Association of Professional Women Engineers (APWEN) has passionately advocated for international efforts aimed at glacier conservation, underscoring their crucial function in maintaining the planet’s freshwater supply.
Importance of Glacier Preservation
In a statement released on Sunday, APWEN chairperson Atinuke Owolabi made this appeal to mark World Water Day (WWD). The theme for WWD 2025 is “Glacier Preservation.” Glaciers play an essential role as their meltwater not only supplies drinking water but also supports agriculture, fuels various industries, generates clean energy, and contributes to thriving ecosystems.
Impact on Nigeria
While Nigeria is not home to any glaciers, Owolabi pointed out that the global melting of ice masses has repercussions for the nation, leading to various climate-related challenges. She emphasized the interconnectedness of glaciers’ health and Nigeria’s environment, highlighting the significant roles engineers play in addressing issues like water security and rising sea levels.
Engineers at the Forefront
Owolabi noted that engineers are pivotal in implementing climate strategies, innovative water management practices, and coastal protection measures. “Glaciers serve as natural reservoirs that help regulate river flows. When they start to melt, the resulting disruption affects water supplies critical for farming, industries, and everyday life, even in regions that do not have glaciers,” she commented.
The Threat of Rising Sea Levels
She also highlighted the serious implications of melting glaciers, which contribute to rising sea levels, posing threats to coastal cities like Lagos and Port Harcourt through increased flooding, erosion, and habitat loss.
Engineering Solutions
Owolabi advocates for sustainable engineering practices that reduce greenhouse gas emissions, which are a primary cause of glacier melting. Additionally, she emphasized the importance of efficient water conservation measures to ensure lasting water security. “Constructing resilient infrastructure is vital to protect communities from the impacts of rising sea levels,” she stated.
Empowering Women in Engineering
APWEN has been instrumental in empowering women engineers in Lagos to spearhead initiatives targeting climate resilience and environmental sustainability. “By working together, we can drive innovation, promote sustainability, and enhance our resilience in the face of climate change,” Owolabi asserted.
