Empowering Women in Science and Technology for Global Security
“The participation of women in science and technology is crucial not only for fostering innovation but also for enhancing our collective security. This competition hosted by NATO provides an exciting chance for young female scientists and researchers to refine their ideas and play a role in addressing global security issues,” stated Minister of Defense Andris Sprūds.
Competition Overview
This competition invites female university students and early-career researchers, along with those aspiring to careers in STEM fields or security and defense. The application period remains open until March 11, welcoming proposals aimed at tackling existing challenges or threats related to NATO’s core science and technology priorities: deterrence, energy, resilience, space, and climate change.
Eligibility Criteria
To participate, applicants must be women aged 18 to 35, currently enrolled at a university, and citizens of NATO member states. Submission of the application is required in English and must address the key question: “What research idea would you like NATO to implement in the next five years?” Applicants should also provide responses to supplementary questions regarding their proposals.
Final Selection Process
A jury will assess the submitted proposals based on various criteria including novelty, relevance, coherence, feasibility, and potential positive impact. Twelve finalists will be selected to present their proposals during a 10-minute presentation at NATO Headquarters in Brussels on June 6.
Acknowledgment of Excellence
Following the presentations, the jury will evaluate the finalists’ work and choose three outstanding winners. For further details about the competition, please visit the official website.
