Texas Woman Arrested for Fraudulent Claims of Domestic Violence
HOUSTON, Texas — Joanna King, a woman who allegedly solicited funds by presenting herself as a victim of domestic violence, has been arrested for the second time this year. Her latest arrest occurred on October 16, following her failure to appear in court for charges related to theft that spanned multiple years.
Allegations of Deception
Between March 2023 and July 2025, authorities report that King raised over $3,000 from numerous women, claiming she required financial assistance for accommodation after fleeing an abusive spouse. During her encounters, she was often accompanied by four children, which seemingly added to her credibility.
Deborah Fontaine, a retired teacher, recounted an encounter with King in a Kroger parking lot where King, with children present, presented a fabricated brochure supposedly from the Houston Police Department. Fontaine felt compelled to help, saying, “My heart went out to her. She’s got kids crying in the car.”
Fabricated Identity
Fontaine shared that King provided a phone number claiming it belonged to the Houston Police Department’s Victims Unit. However, Eyewitness News found this number to be disconnected upon investigation. Fontaine ended up withdrawing $300 to assist King, believing she was genuinely in need.
Ongoing Legal Proceedings
King was initially arrested in July 2023 and charged with aggregate theft. Despite being released on bond, reports described her as continuing to use the same deceptive story to solicit money from others.
After failing to comply with court appearance requirements, law enforcement utilized Flock cameras to track her vehicle and subsequently arrested her on October 16. King now faces a bond set at $200,000.
Children’s Welfare
Reports from Child Protective Services indicated that two of the children present with King during her solicitations are actually adults, while the remaining two, aged eight and thirteen, are now in the care of family members.
As Fontaine expressed, “She has a lot of gall. And a lot of desperation as well. Or knows how to play the game.”
The investigation is ongoing, and the Houston Police Department has not confirmed whether any further actions against individuals assisting King are planned.
