MARQUETTE — The Northern Michigan University women’s golf team is set to kick off its season at the upcoming Warrior Invitational, hosted by Wayne State. The event will take place in the suburbs of Detroit and is scheduled for Monday and Tuesday.
Similar to the men’s tournament held earlier this week, the women will face a packed schedule, featuring two rounds of 18 holes on Monday and a final round on Tuesday. This intense setup mirrors the men’s experience at the Bulldog Fall Classic, where they faced challenges in completing back-to-back rounds.
Event Details and Team Outlook
The tournament will be hosted at The Orchards Golf Club in Washington Township, located in Macomb County. The competition includes a total of thirteen teams, prominently featuring members from the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC). Among the participants, Grand Valley State stands out as a national powerhouse, ranked No. 10, followed closely by Ferris State and Wayne State.
Weather forecasts indicate comfortable golfing conditions with temperatures reaching the mid to upper 70s, though a nearly 50% chance of rain each day may pose challenges for the competitors.
Last year, NMU secured a sixth-place finish in this tournament, with standout performances from then-freshman Maddy Martens, who shot 11-over-par for two rounds and finished in a tie for sixth. Her impressive second round of 74, featuring four birdies, significantly improved her standing on the leaderboard.
Future Events and Schedule
Following the Warrior Invitational, the Northern Michigan women’s team will participate in a tournament similar to the Bulldog Fall Classic, hosted by Ferris State this coming weekend.
Meanwhile, the NMU men’s team will return to action at the Motor City Shakedown, scheduled for September 29-30, hosted by Wayne State in Dearborn.
