DANVILLE, Ky. — The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire women’s lacrosse team kicked off their season with a strong performance, securing a 13-10 victory against Centre College on Saturday. Junior Reegan Werner (Farmington, Minn.) achieved a significant milestone, surpassing 100 career points as the Blugolds made a triumphant start to the year.
Game Highlights
The Blugolds (1-0) were led by standout performances from Samantha Burns (Sr. – Mahtomedi, Minn.), Devon Crews (Jr. – St. Louis, Mo./Rockwood Summit), and Ellie Fisher (So. – Stillwater, Minn.), each scoring three goals. Werner contributed two points, marking her career total at 101, making her the third player in the program’s history to reach this milestone.
The turning point came in the third quarter as UW-Eau Claire seized control of the game. After heading into halftime with a narrow 6-5 lead, the Blugolds outscored the Colonels 5-2 in the third period. The Colonels managed to tie the game at 7-7, but Crews ignited a streak that resulted in four consecutive goals for UW-Eau Claire, solidifying their lead for the remainder of the match.
The Blugolds maintained a lead of at least two goals for the rest of the game. Victoria Shea (So. – Pleasant Prairie, Wis./Indian Trail) added two more goals, while Alexie Romanelli (Sr. – Naperville, Ill./Naperville Central) and Werner each contributed one goal. In goal, Alexandria Shea (Sr. – Kenosha, Wis./Indian Trail) made an impressive 11 saves to help secure the win.
The Blugolds also excelled in draw control, finishing with a 15-11 advantage.
