Weekend Recap: UNC Olympic Sports Performances
Men’s Soccer
The University of North Carolina (UNC) men’s soccer team faced a challenging match against Syracuse this past Saturday, where they suffered a 1-0 defeat. The only goal of the game came in the 36th minute, leaving Carolina struggling to equalize, especially during a second half where they registered 13 attempts on goal and required the Syracuse goalkeeper to make eight crucial saves. This marked UNC’s first loss in Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) play for the season, bringing their overall record to 8-3-4 and a conference record of 2-1-4. Looking ahead, the Tar Heels are set to host No. 19 Duke for their regular-season finale on Friday, October 31, at 8 p.m.
Women’s Soccer
In contrast to their male counterparts, the UNC women’s soccer team secured a decisive 4-2 victory against Syracuse on Sunday. Olivia Thomas was instrumental in the win, scoring two goals within five minutes in the first half, contributing to a 4-1 lead by halftime. Linda Ullmark and Kate Faasse also found the net during a robust offensive showing, where the Tar Heels outshot the Orange 21-3 overall, with a notable 10-2 in shots on target. This victory improved their record to 11-6 overall and 5-4 in ACC play. The team will conclude its regular season at home against NC State on Thursday, October 30, at 8 p.m.
Volleyball
Over at Carmichael Arena, the UNC volleyball team participated in two exhilarating matches over the weekend. In the first matchup against Notre Dame on Friday, Carolina found themselves down two sets but managed to rebound strongly. They claimed the third set decisively at 25-17, then pushed through to a 25-20 victory in the fourth. Despite facing a precarious situation in the fifth set, where Notre Dame led early on, UNC turned the tables to win and maintained their unbeaten status in the ACC.
The following day, the Tar Heels went up against No. 8 Louisville, which started strong by taking the first set 25-10. UNC fought hard to overcome a two-set deficit in the third set and extended the match to a fourth. Although Carolina gained an early lead in the fourth set, the Cardinals rallied back, ultimately clinching the match after securing four consecutive points to take the set. This brought UNC’s overall record to 16-3 and 9-1 in the ACC. Next, they will host No. 7 SMU on Friday, October 31, at 6 p.m.
