Jaspers Struggle Against Sacred Heart in MAAC Clash

FAIRFIELD, CT – The Manhattan Jaspers Women’s Volleyball team faced a tough challenge on Friday night, losing in straight sets to the Sacred Heart Pioneers during a MAAC matchup, with scores of 18-25, 24-26, and 21-25 at the William H. Pitt Athletic & Convocation Center.

Match Overview

The Jaspers quickly seized an early advantage in the first set, taking a 6-3 lead, thanks in part to a dual block by Emma Francesconi and Abby Morreale. However, a series of service errors allowed Sacred Heart to rally, taking control with a decisive 6-1 run.

As the set progressed, the Pioneers built momentum, winning the first set despite a late surge by the Jaspers, who were unable to maintain their initial lead.

Second Set Highlights

In the second set, Morreale continued her strong performance with another block, helping the Jaspers to an early 4-1 lead. Midway through the set, Manhattan surged again with seven unanswered points, highlighted by a service ace from Katie Powers and another block from Morreale and teammate Hanna Kaczynska. However, trailing at 19-23, Sacred Heart mounted a comeback, eventually winning the set 26-24 with a kill and a dual block.

Final Set Dynamics

The third set saw Sacred Heart jump ahead early with a 9-4 lead. The Jaspers showed resilience, tying the match at 14-14 after a fierce spike from Kaczynska. Despite closing the gap to a single point late in the set, Manhattan could not overcome Sacred Heart’s final push, with the Pioneers closing out the match 25-21.

Performance Highlights

  • Abby Morreale led the Jaspers’ effort, contributing eight kills and five blocks.
  • Manhattan achieved its highest hitting percentage during the second set at .222.
  • The Jaspers dominated the serve game, recording seven service aces compared to just one for the Pioneers.
  • Fiona VanDyke was a standout defensively, notching 15 digs.
  • Senior setter Sarah Emmons distributed 14 assists throughout the match.

Next Matchup

Looking ahead, the Jaspers will continue their road itinerary on October 18, taking on the Fairfield Stags. The match is set for 4 p.m. at the Leo D. Mahoney Arena and will be available to watch via a paid subscription to ESPN+.
