LONG BEACH, Calif. — The University of Hawai’i women’s volleyball team began a challenging three-match road trip with a defeat against Long Beach State, falling in straight sets during their match at the Walter Pyramid on Friday evening.

The Rainbow Wahine, currently with a record of 6-12 (2-5 Big West), struggled against Long Beach State (14-5, 7-1), losing with set scores of 25-16, 25-23, and 25-19. This loss marks their fourth consecutive defeat, breaking a previous four-match winning streak over the Beach in their rivalry.

Player Highlights

  • Cha’lei Reid: Led the team with 10 kills, alongside 3 blocks and 6 digs.
  • Miliana Sylvester: Contributed 8 kills with an impressive hitting percentage of .412.
  • Bri Gunderson: Added 6 kills and 3 blocks to the team’s efforts.
  • Victoria Leyva: Recorded 23 digs, marking her sixth match of the season with 20 or more digs, and served 2 aces.
  • Elise Agi (LBSU): Standout for the Beach with 11 kills, complemented by Logan King with 10 kills.

Set Breakdown

The match commenced with both teams trading points, but LBSU surged ahead with a pivotal 9-0 run in the first set. Though UH attempted a late comeback, they fell short, allowing Long Beach to clinch the set.

The second set saw the Rainbow Wahine start strong, leading 4-0, but Long Beach rallied to equal the score at 8-8. A tight battle ensued, with multiple lead changes. UH tied the set at 23-23 before an attack error handed the set to LBSU.

In the third set, the Beach dominated early. Despite some attempts from UH to close the gap at different points, LBSU’s consistent play sealed the match.

The Rainbow Wahine will continue their road trip, set to face UC San Diego next. The match will take place on Saturday at LionTree Arena in La Jolla, Calif., with the first serve scheduled for 6 p.m. Pacific Time (3 p.m. Hawai’i Time).
