UNC Olympic Sports Recap: Dominant Wins and Tough Losses

This past Sunday, the University of North Carolina (UNC) saw a mixed bag of results across its Olympic sports teams. The field hockey and volleyball teams achieved notable victories, while the women’s soccer team faced a challenging defeat on the road against Duke University.

Volleyball Triumphs in Atlanta

In a highly competitive matchup, the Tar Heels’ volleyball team traveled to Atlanta to face the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets, securing a hard-fought 3-1 victory. This win marked UNC’s first against Georgia Tech since 2017.

  • Set Breakdown:
    • First Set: Georgia Tech claimed a commanding lead at 25-17.
    • Second Set: UNC rallied back with a key 7-3 run, ultimately winning the set 25-20 after some tense moments.
    • Third Set: The Tar Heels showcased their offensive strength, winning 25-19 with critical kills from players like Safi Hampton and Laynie Smith.
    • Fourth Set: Continuing the momentum, UNC clinched the match with a decisive 25-17 win, benefitting from early dominance.
  • Player Highlights:
    • Safi Hampton led with 16 kills.
    • Laynie Smith and Chelsea Thorpe together contributed 22 kills.
    • Zoe Behrendt and Emily Bobbitt were instrumental, combining for 39 of UNCs 47 assists.

As a result of this victory, the Tar Heels improved their record to 13-2 overall and remain unbeaten in Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) play at 6-0. They are set to continue their seven-match winning streak against Boston College this Friday at 7 p.m.

Field Hockey Maintains Dominance

Meanwhile, the field hockey team had a commanding performance against No. 19 Louisville at Karen Shelton Stadium, winning 3-0 and keeping the Cardinals without a shot on goal—a first for UNC this season.

  • Match Highlights:
    • Shot Count: UNC outshot Louisville 23-2, the largest differential since a prior 34-5 advantage against Stanford.
    • Scoring Timeline:
      • Kara Heck opened the scoring in the first quarter.
      • Isabel Boere and Sanne Hak each added goals in subsequent periods.

The Tar Heels, now 12-1 and 5-1 in ACC play, have claimed four consecutive victories following a prior double-overtime loss to Wake Forest. They will face No. 5 Syracuse next Friday, October 17, at 3 p.m.

Women’s Soccer Faces Tough Loss at Duke

The women’s soccer team encountered a challenging match against No. 14 Duke, ultimately losing 3-2. After a scoreless first half, the Blue Devils struck with two quick goals early in the second half, followed by a third in the 75th minute.

  • Scoring Summary:
    • UNC scored two goals in the final minute, narrowing the gap to 3-2, but ran out of time to equalize.

This defeat brings UNC’s record to 9-5 overall and 3-3 in league play, matching the total losses from the previous season. The team seeks to improve its road performance next Friday when they face SMU in Dallas at 6 p.m. Eastern time, marking their first encounter with the Mustangs as ACC opponents.
