UT Arlington Women’s Tennis Team Concludes Season with Loss to Grand Canyon in WAC Championship
The University of Texas at Arlington (UTA) women’s tennis team saw their season come to an end with a 4-0 loss against Grand Canyon University (GCU) in the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) Tournament Championship. The decisive match took place at the Styslinger/Altec Tennis Complex in Dallas.
Season Highlights and Team Resilience
Despite the final outcome, UTA head coach Diego Benitez expressed immense pride in his team’s perseverance throughout the season. “It’s a season that I’m going to remember forever because of all the adversity that we had to go through,” Benitez stated, emphasizing the significance of team unity and effort.
Match Overview
The championship match began with doubles play, which proved to be the most competitive segment for UTA. The duo of senior Nika Novikova and freshman Maria Lucia Araoz-Gosn secured the Mavericks’ only doubles victory, winning their set 6-3. However, the other two pairs, including junior Valeriia Ivanovskaia and senior Mialy Ranaivo, fell short, losing their set 6-4, thereby losing the doubles point to GCU.
Singles Play Performance
Upcoming challenges awaited during the singles matches, where UTA struggled to gain momentum. Senior Ioana Dumitrescu observed that changing conditions due to weather—resulting in a switch to an indoor court—may have placed the team at a disadvantage. Though UTA’s Novikova and Araoz-Gosn achieved winning sets, the remaining matches were halted due to GCU’s commanding lead.
GCU entered this match vying for a third consecutive WAC title, demonstrating their outstanding competitive spirit. Dumitrescu was first to lose in singles against GCU junior Dania Deaifi, who was named the Most Outstanding Player of the Tournament. The successive losses of Ivanovskaia and Ranaivo ultimately led to Grand Canyon securing the championship title.
Future Outlook
This championship marked the conclusion of the Mavericks’ 2025 season and resulted in the departure of key players, including Dumitrescu, Jimenez, and Novikova. Coach Benitez reflected on their contributions, saying, “They came to practice every day giving it all. In each match, day in and day out, there was no one occasion that they did not play their hardest. So proud of that. This is a great group of girls.”
Looking forward, Benitez hinted at new talent on the horizon, suggesting a focus on recruitment to strengthen the team for upcoming seasons.
As the Mavericks now shift their focus to future opportunities, they will undoubtedly carry lessons learned from this season’s challenges into next year’s competition.
