Coyotes Make History with Dominant Start in Women’s Basketball
The University of South Dakota Coyotes have achieved a remarkable milestone, marking the first time in their Division I history that they have opened the women’s basketball season with six consecutive victories. This accomplishment was underscored by a commanding 85-44 win over the Valparaiso University Beacons at the Sanford Coyote Sports Center.
Game Highlights
The Coyotes showcased an impressive all-around performance, with multiple players contributing significantly to the scoreboard. Both Patience Williams and Elise Turrubiates led the team with 13 points each, while Williams also excelled on the boards, securing 16 rebounds. Angelina Robles added 11 points and provided five assists, and Molly Joyce matched that with another 11 points.
Defensive Strength
South Dakota’s defense was a pivotal element in their victory. The Coyotes permitted Valparaiso to score just five points in the first quarter, demonstrating their defensive prowess as they maintained a firm grip on the game. Coach Carrie Eighmey remarked on the team’s defensive consistency, noting, “…in the first [quarter], we only gave up five [points], so our team defense continues to be something that we are going to rely on.”
First Quarter Momentum
The game commenced with the Coyotes capitalizing on an early turnover, allowing Robles to score first. After Valparaiso managed an early 3-pointer from Mikayla Huffine, the Coyotes launched a decisive 13-point run led by Jenna Hopp, who scored three times in the opening period. The first quarter concluded with South Dakota firmly in the lead at 23-5.
Building the Lead
Valparaiso attempted to rally in the second quarter, with Fiona Connolly and Milana Nenadic contributing baskets, but the Coyotes countered effectively. South Dakota maintained a comfortable edge, entering halftime with a score of 32-18 thanks to a final basket from Turrubiates.
Explosive Third Quarter
In a powerful third quarter, South Dakota markedly increased their lead, scoring 28 points. Turrubiates continued her strong performance, adding another seven points in this period. Coach Eighmey highlighted the team’s strategic improvement, stating, “I thought we did a much, much better job of not settling for kind of mid-range jumpers and early shots.”
Closing the Game
The Coyotes initiated the fourth quarter with a quick nine-point burst and, despite Valparaiso’s efforts to fight back, South Dakota’s comprehensive gameplay prevailed. The final score stood at 85-44, with South Dakota holding Valparaiso to 13 points or fewer in each quarter.
Looking Ahead
Following this victory, the Coyotes, now boasting a 6-0 record, are set to face Arkansas-Pine Bluff soon. Upcoming match-ups include an away game at Wyoming on November 29 and a trip to Portland State for the Big Sky-Summit Challenge on December 3.
