Brittany Batts Takes the Helm as Head Women’s Basketball Coach at USC Aiken
On April 18, USC Aiken introduced Brittany Batts as the new head coach of its women’s basketball team, marking a significant moment in the program’s history as she becomes the eighth individual to assume this role. Batts joins USC Aiken following a successful tenure at Gannon University, where she played a key role in a program that achieved consecutive NCAA Division II Elite Eight appearances.
Background and Experience
Brittany Batts is no stranger to success in collegiate basketball. During her time as an assistant coach at Gannon from 2011 to 2015, she contributed to the team’s impressive record of 116 wins against only 22 losses, which included two appearances in the Elite Eight. Her coaching experience extends beyond Gannon, having previously served at Chicago State University and Shepherd University, among other institutions.
Vision for USC Aiken
Expressing her enthusiasm for the new opportunity, Batts stated, “Moments like those all started with a vision long before the season began, built on strong relationships, discipline, hard work, and joy for the game — a vision I am creating for USC Aiken, as well.”
She is taking over the program at a time when the Pacers, under former head coach Mark Miller, faced challenges which included a record of 92-142 over nine seasons. Although the team reached the NCAA Tournament in 2023, recent struggles prompted a change in leadership.
Commitment to Relationships and Team Development
In her introductory statements, Batts emphasized the importance of relationships in building a successful team. “I think everything starts with relationships. When people know you care for them, they’re going to do that much more for you,” she noted. This philosophy is fundamental to her coaching strategy, focusing on fostering connections that enhance team dynamics both on and off the court.
Strategic Approach to Coaching
Batts plans to implement a fast-paced and versatile style of play at USC Aiken. She is eager to push the ball in transition and utilize a strong inside game while also taking advantage of perimeter shooting. “I love shooters on the perimeter, knock down the open 3. We get out there defensively, defend 94 feet,” she commented, outlining her strategy for enhancing the team’s performance.
Looking Ahead
With the season opener several months away, Batts is already focused on recruiting and preparing her players for the upcoming challenges. “That starts with recruiting… just making sure the message is clear, they know my vision for this program,” she explained. She aims to instill a sense of belief and commitment among her players, urging them to visualize success and to put in the necessary work to achieve their goals.
Support from USC Aiken Administration
Unified in their excitement for Batts’s hiring, USC Aiken’s Director of Athletics Todd Wilkinson remarked on her successful track record and potential to elevate the program. He expressed his aspirations for the team, stating, “I want to go to the national tournament as the AD, so come on! No pressure.”
As Batts embarks on this new chapter with the USC Aiken Pacers, the focus will be on building a competitive program and creating a winning culture that reflects her guiding principles.
