Gender Snapshot 2025: Tracking Progress on Gender Equality
12 September 2025 – The forthcoming report, titled Progress on the Sustainable Development Goals: The Gender Snapshot 2025, is set to be released on 15 September 2025. Commissioned by UN Women and UN DESA, this report examines all 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and highlights the latest evidence and trends in gender equality.
Significant Milestones in Gender Equality
2025 is a pivotal year for advancing global gender equality, marking the:
- 30th anniversary of the Beijing Platform for Action
- 25th anniversary of UN Security Council Resolution 1325
- 80th anniversary of the United Nations
- 10-year anniversary of the Sustainable Development Goals
With only five years left to meet the SDGs, this report serves as a reminder of the urgency to address gender parity across the globe.
Progress and Ongoing Challenges
Since the introduction of the SDGs, there have been notable advancements for women and girls, including:
- New legislation supporting women’s rights
- Increased access to education and health services
However, the report reveals that substantial gaps persist. Notably, none of the indicators for SDG 5, which focuses on gender equality, have achieved or are close to reaching their targets. The status indicators reveal:
- 1 indicator is “close to target”
- 10 indicators are at a “moderate distance to target”
- 2 indicators are “far from target”
- 1 indicator is “very far from target”
- 4 indicators lack sufficient data
The Interconnectedness of Gender Equality and Global Challenges
The fight for gender equality is increasingly threatened by external factors such as climate change, armed conflicts, and a rising global backlash against women’s rights. The repercussions of failing to achieve gender equality extend beyond women and girls, impacting entire communities and economies.
Investing in Gender Equality for a Sustainable Future
Accelerated action towards achieving the SDGs could significantly reduce female extreme poverty from 9.2% in 2025 to 2.7% by 2050. Furthermore, such efforts could unlock an additional $35.6 trillion in global GDP by 2050.
The report outlines necessary investments and collaborative actions to propel faster progress toward gender equality—a crucial path for a sustainable future for all women and girls.
