Redefining Leadership in Technology

The impact of progress in the UAE mirrors the empowerment of individuals shaping it, particularly women in technology. As Emirati Women’s Day approaches, it’s imperative to acknowledge the authentic leadership emerging in science and technology sectors.

In the UAE, women are considered indispensable contributors to national development in various fields, including space exploration and renewable energy. This commitment is evident in the country’s push towards a knowledge-based economy, where women are promoted as innovators and decision-makers.

Personal Journey in Technology

Dr. Najwa Aaraj, CEO of the Technology Innovation Institute (TII), reflects on her experiences in disciplines such as mathematics, cryptography, and artificial intelligence. Her journey illustrates a personal conviction to lead in complex technological realms instead of seeking validation.

At TII, Dr. Aaraj oversees a thriving team of over 355 scientists and engineers, including 157 Emirati women, who are actively involved in pioneering research in AI, robotics, quantum technologies, and cryptography. Their endeavors are crucial in establishing the UAE as a leader in artificial intelligence research and development.

The Global Landscape

Despite the progress in the UAE, global statistics highlight a significant gender gap in the technology workforce. According to Randstad, women make up less than one-third of AI professionals and merely 18% of AI researchers worldwide. This disparity points towards systemic barriers rather than a lack of interest or capability among women in technical fields.

Building an Inclusive Future

The UAE is actively transforming inclusion from a moral obligation to a competitive advantage. One pivotal initiative is the NexTech Program launched by the Advanced Technology Research Council (ATRC). This program exclusively supports Emirati students, with an emphasis on empowering young women to pursue education at prestigious institutions like Cambridge, Yale, and CalTech. Through this initiative, participants return to the UAE equipped to lead advanced technological innovations.

Future Generations of Emirati Women in AI

The next cohort of Emirati women in AI will play a critical role in determining the ethical and inclusive nature of the UAE’s technological advancements. Their contributions will shape not only local industries but also set standards for global practices.

In her position, Dr. Aaraj emphasizes the importance of mentorship and encouragement for young women considering careers in these fields. “I didn’t wait for permission,” she asserts, affirming the necessity for women to claim their space in science and technology.

The Path Forward

For meaningful progress to continue, operationalizing inclusion is vital. Investments must be directed towards nurturing talent through education, mentorship, and opportunities that support women in AI and technology.

This Emirati Women’s Day serves as both a celebration of achievements and a reminder of the ongoing challenges. As AI becomes increasingly integral to economies and governance worldwide, it is crucial that the systems we develop reflect the full spectrum of human intelligence, including the vital contributions of women.

When women rise in AI, they elevate not only themselves but also the broader societal frameworks within which technology operates.
