Dr. Najwa Aaraj, CEO of the Technology Innovation Institute (TII), reflects on her experiences in disciplines such as mathematics, cryptography, and artificial intelligence. Her journey illustrates a personal conviction to lead in complex technological realms instead of seeking validation.

At TII, Dr. Aaraj oversees a thriving team of over 355 scientists and engineers, including 157 Emirati women, who are actively involved in pioneering research in AI, robotics, quantum technologies, and cryptography. Despite the progress in the UAE, global statistics highlight a significant gender gap in the technology workforce. According to Randstad, women make up less than one-third of AI professionals and merely 18% of AI researchers worldwide. One pivotal initiative is the NexTech Program launched by the Advanced Technology Research Council (ATRC). This program exclusively supports Emirati students, with an emphasis on empowering young women to pursue education at prestigious institutions like Cambridge, Yale, and CalTech. Through this initiative, participants return to the UAE equipped to lead advanced technological innovations.
