University of St. Joseph Launches NCAA Division III Hockey Teams

October 14, 2025, 03:33 PM ET

The University of St. Joseph, located in West Hartford, Connecticut, is set to introduce NCAA Division III men’s and women’s hockey teams, with the inaugural season slated for 2026. This development aims to enhance the university’s athletic portfolio and attract a diverse student body.

Partnership with Local Facility

To support these new teams, St. Joseph will collaborate with the International Skating Center situated in nearby Simsbury, which will host both practices and games. This partnership is expected to provide state-of-the-art facilities for the teams.

University Leadership Insights

Dr. Rhona Free, president of the university, expressed enthusiasm about the new hockey programs, stating, “This is an exciting step forward for USJ. We’re building on the championship success of our men’s lacrosse, men’s soccer, and men’s and women’s basketball teams in recent years.” She highlighted that adding ice hockey is a logical progression in expanding the university’s sports offerings.

Strategic Goals and Market Context

University officials aim to provide athletic opportunities for students while also tapping into the growing hockey culture in Connecticut. Notably, local schools such as UConn and Quinnipiac have made their mark, with both ranking among the top 12 in NCAA Division I men’s hockey.

Comparative Landscape

St. Joseph’s move aligns with other local institutions, including Trinity College and Wesleyan University, which also have established Division III hockey programs. This strategic addition reflects a broader trend towards enhancing collegiate athletics within the state.

Search for Coaching and Conference Affiliations

The university is set to conduct a national search for coaches who will embody the values of St. Joseph and are committed to developing intuitive student-athletes. Amanda Devitt, associate vice president for athletics and recreation, emphasized the university’s desire for “student-centered leaders who embrace the values of USJ.” Furthermore, the school will pursue an appropriate conference affiliation to provide a competitive framework for its teams.

This initiative represents a significant milestone for the University of St. Joseph as it seeks to enrich its student experience both academically and athletically.
