Free Self-Defense Classes for Women in Union County
The Union County Board of Commissioners, in collaboration with the Union County Sheriff’s Office, is set to host complimentary self-defense training specifically designed for young women aged 18 to 23. The sessions will take place at the John H. Stamler Police Academy, located at 1776 Raritan Road in Scotch Plains, on the evenings of Tuesday, July 22, and Tuesday, July 29, from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM.
Empowerment through Practical Skills
Union County Commissioner Chairwoman Lourdes M. Leon emphasizes the importance of these classes, stating, “These classes are your chance to develop real-life skills and take charge of your personal safety. We want every young woman to feel strong, confident, and prepared—especially as you head back to campus this fall.”
This initiative aims to instill confidence and practical self-defense techniques in participants, enabling them to safeguard themselves and their loved ones. In addition to physical techniques, the training will focus on enhancing participants’ situational awareness to detect and avoid potential dangers before they escalate.
Expert Guidance from Certified Officers
Experienced officers will facilitate the sessions, sharing vital safety strategies and risk-reduction tips relevant to daily life. Union County Sheriff Peter Corvelli highlights the classes’ broader focus: “Being aware of your surroundings is one of the most powerful tools you can have. These self-defense classes aren’t just about self-defense moves, but learning how to spot red flags and make quick decisions under stress.”
