Wesleyan Women’s Basketball Faces Defeat in Lafrance Hospitality Tournament

Game Recap

On Saturday afternoon, the Wesleyan women’s basketball team encountered a fiercely contested match against the University of New England (UNE) during the Lafrance Hospitality Tournament, which was held at UMass Dartmouth. The game was marked by a series of close plays, featuring seven ties and 11 lead changes, ultimately resulting in a 57-48 loss for the Cardinals.

First Half Highlights

The first half was characterized by tight scoring, as neither team was able to establish a significant lead, with the score fluctuating throughout. Olivia Quinn, a standout player for Wesleyan, started the game with impressive momentum, contributing nine of the Cardinals’ initial 11 points through four successful shots.

In the second quarter, Wesleyan managed to gain a slight advantage, leading 13-10 following a jumper from Alli Jones. The half concluded with UNE narrowly ahead at 28-27.

Defensive Struggles and Turnarounds

In the third quarter, UNE’s defensive strategies proved effective, limiting Wesleyan to just eight points while going on a 7-0 run that extended their lead to 39-31.

As the final quarter began, Wesleyan faced a six-point deficit. UNE extended their lead to a decisive 51-40 with only 3:13 left on the clock, appearing to secure the victory.

Late Game Surge

Despite the odds, Wesleyan showed resilience as they rallied with crucial three-pointers from Meghan Kirck and Aviva Schnitzer, narrowing the score to 51-46 with 1:44 remaining. However, a missed opportunity by Quinn for another three-pointer could have shifted the momentum in favor of the Cardinals. UNE ultimately sealed their victory with effective free-throw shooting in the closing moments.

The game highlighted notable performances, particularly from:

  • Olivia Quinn: 17 points (8-16 FG), 6 rebounds
  • Alli Jones: Double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds, including five offensive rebounds
  • Aviva Schnitzer: 9 points (4-8 FG), 4 rebounds, and 2 blocks
