UMD Women’s Basketball Preseason Outlook

The University of Minnesota Duluth (UMD) women’s basketball team has been positioned to finish third in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) North Division for the upcoming season, as per the NSIC’s annual preseason poll. UMD garnered a total of 37 points, placing them behind the University of Mary and Minnesota State University Moorhead, which received 42 and 43 points respectively.

In terms of overall ranking within the conference, UMD is currently listed in eighth place with 139 points, trailing teams such as Minnesota State University Moorhead, the University of Mary, St. Cloud State University, and Southwestern Minnesota State University. In the larger picture, Minnesota State University Mankato tops the NSIC standings with 215 points.

Recent Performance and Historical Context

The Bulldogs have a strong recent history, having clinched the North Division title for the past four seasons from 2019 to 2023. Prior to these championships, they secured second place. Notably, the conference operated under a unified division format for the past two years, where UMD recorded a balanced 22-22 record in NSIC games.

Player Spotlight: Lexi Karge

Senior forward Lexi Karge has been named the NSIC’s Bulldog Player to Watch for the upcoming season. Karge showcased her skills last season by averaging 11 points per game and ranking second on the team in rebounds with an average of 6.1 per game. Additionally, she led in blocked shots with 21, and was instrumental in both field goals and free throws made, contributing 126 and 41 respectively.

“Lexi continues to improve and add positive dimensions to her game!” said Bulldog head coach Mandy Pearson. “She may be one of the most athletic players I have coached, and I am excited to see how much better she can get this year!”

Upcoming Schedule

The Bulldogs will kick off their 2025-26 season with a matchup against the College of St. Scholastica on October 29th. NSIC play is scheduled to commence on November 25th, when UMD faces Bemidji State University.
