UCLA Softball Advances to 2023 Women’s College World Series
COLUMBIA, S.C. — UCLA’s softball team is heading to Oklahoma City for the Women’s College World Series for the 33rd time.
Super Regional Victory Over South Carolina
In a decisive performance, UCLA overcame a game deficit to defeat South Carolina 5-0 in the final game of the Columbia Super Regional on Sunday. Coach Kelly Inouye-Perez expressed her pride in the team’s journey: “To be able to be a final eight [team] is a goal, and the ability to overcome day one is because they [players] were so committed to the process.”
Key Contributors and Standout Performance
Following a dramatic walk-off home run from Jordan Woolery that kept UCLA’s (54-11) season alive in Game 2, Woolery opened the scoring with an RBI single in the first inning against South Carolina (44-17)’s starting pitcher, Sam Gress. Despite having the bases loaded early, UCLA’s offense struggled to extend their lead, but Kaitlyn Terry ensured the early run secured a solid foundation.
Terry showcased an impressive performance, pitching 5 ⅔ innings of shutout ball, allowing only two hits and recording four strikeouts. The Bruins’ pitching staff limited South Carolina to just four runs on 12 hits across the two back-to-back victories. Terry attributed her success to “spinning the ball and trusting my stuff.”
Series Progression and Strategy
UCLA’s pitching evolved throughout the series, improving from allowing nine runs on Friday to securing a shutout on Sunday. “We owned the fact that we didn’t play our game on Friday,” said Inouye-Perez. The team’s focused alterations paid off handsomely.
In the fifth inning, Woolery added an insurance run with an infield single, driving in Jessica Clements after her double. Tension mounted as the Bruins faced significant pressure in the later innings, particularly when South Carolina threatened with tying runs on base. However, critical defensive plays prevented any scoring.
Closing the Game and Future Challenges
UCLA secured the game with three additional runs in the seventh inning, highlighted by RBIs from Rylee Slimp and Alexis Ramirez. “We have to keep going and pushing and never letting up,” remarked second baseman Savannah Pola, emphasizing the importance of maintaining momentum.
The series concluded with a final out from South Carolina’s Emily Vinson, solidifying UCLA’s victory and advancement to the Women’s College World Series. The Bruins are set to face Oregon, a familiar opponent from this season, with memories of a previous series loss still fresh. “We are a different team,” Inouye-Perez stated, indicating the team’s growth since their last encounter.
