DAVIS, Calif. — The UC Davis Women’s Golf Team is celebrating a significant achievement as they prepare to compete in the NCAA Regional Tournament for the first time since 2015. Their success is rooted in a strong team culture, marked by emotional connections and a relentless work ethic.
Team Spirit and Culture
Junior captain Lauren Calderon expressed the team’s enthusiasm, stating, “I think everyone is just really excited. And really happy that we get to play some more golf.” This excitement is shared by head coach Amelia Hicks, who remarked, “Oh my gosh, I’m so excited. It’s been a crazy few weeks of emotions.”
The Dynamics of Success
The bond among team members is a pivotal factor in their performance. Freshman Elina Kuang shared, “Genuinely, the team culture here is so amazing. And we just push each other to be the best versions.” Fellow freshman Jade Bai echoed this sentiment, noting, “I don’t think I’ve ever seen another team as genuine as ours.”
Leadership Impact
Under the leadership of first-year head coach Amelia Hicks, the team’s camaraderie has flourished. Hicks emphasizes the significance of fostering a winning culture. “Part of why our culture is so successful is because of Coach Amelia,” said Kuang. “You can go to her for any issue.” Sophomore Vani Karimanal added, “We’re so blessed to have her. It’s her first year, and she’s doing amazing.”
Mutual Inspiration
The admiration between Hicks and her athletes is reciprocal. Hicks expressed, “This is the part of the job that just makes me so happy and so proud. That I can influence and change their lives. And they’re changing mine.”
Upcoming Challenges
The team is set to travel to Lubbock, Texas, where the NCAA Regionals will take place at Texas Tech University this weekend. Their journey ahead is filled with both challenges and opportunities for growth.
With a strong support system and a commitment to excellence, the UC Davis Women’s Golf Team is poised to make a significant impact at the upcoming tournament.
