UAH Women’s Basketball: A Season of High Hopes Under Coach Allen Sharpe
As the UAH women’s basketball team gears up for the upcoming season, Coach Allen Sharpe remains a constant source of stability and motivation. Known for his competitive spirit and consistency, he emphasizes the importance of a strong team culture, regardless of game outcomes.
Last Season’s Highlights
Under Sharpe’s leadership in his inaugural year, the Chargers achieved a remarkable 25-7 record, culminating in a spot in the NCAA Division II tournament—only the fourth in the program’s history. The energy around the team is palpable as they prepare to build on this success.
Upcoming Fixtures
Practice sessions are already underway, with an exhibition game scheduled against Division I opponent Alabama A&M on October 27. The regular season commences on November 7, as the Chargers face Southwest Minnesota State in Denton, Texas.
Team Composition and Expectations
This year, expectations are soaring. Star player Lili Wilken, the defending Gulf South Conference Player of the Year, is set to return after an outstanding season averaging 18 points and 6.5 rebounds per game. Welcoming back sharpshooters like Millie Brown and fellow starters Ivey Maddox and Bella White adds depth to the roster.
Despite past successes, Coach Sharpe recognizes that returning players doesn’t guarantee future victories. However, he believes it provides the team with a competitive edge over last year’s squad, which was adapting to new coaching dynamics and player roles.
Leadership from Veterans
According to Coach Sharpe, the returning veterans are essential for smoothly integrating new talent. “We’re going to lean on those veterans a lot,” he noted, emphasizing their role in setting the practice intensity and culture for newcomers.
As they enter the season, the Chargers carry the weight of previous near-success, finishing as runners-up in the Gulf South Conference tournament last year after a narrow six-point defeat to top-seeded Union. Team member Bella White expressed that this feeling has instilled a determined mindset going into the new season.
New Additions to the Roster
The team is also excited about the fresh faces joining the roster. Seven new players, including freshmen McKenzie Percoski and Ava McSwain, bring promising skills to the mix. Additionally, transfer Chloe Siegel is expected to make an immediate impact after a strong career at North Alabama.
Siegel, a Deshler High alumnus, holds several state shooting records and is regarded as one of the top shooters in AHSAA history. Her experience and talent will be invaluable as the team looks to capitalize on offensive opportunities.
Looking Ahead
With a blend of seasoned players and promising newcomers, the UAH Chargers are poised for a thrilling season. Millie Brown remarked on the team’s speed and shooting capabilities, critical factors that could lead them to numerous victories.
The upcoming season holds great potential for UAH women’s basketball as they strive for improvement, aiming to secure accolades that reflect their hard work and dedication while showcasing their unique style of play.
