Senegal Women’s Basketball Team Cancels U.S. Training Camp Due to Visa Denials

The Senegalese women’s national basketball team has officially canceled its planned 10-day training camp in the United States, originally scheduled from June 22 to July 3. This decision follows the denial of visas for five players, six coaching staff members, and a government official from the Senegalese Ministry of Sports, as announced by the Senegalese Basketball Federation.

Context of Visa Rejections

The visa issues arise shortly after the Trump administration announced a travel ban that affects several countries, although Senegal was not initially included in the primary list. Recent reports indicate that the administration is contemplating expanding the ban to encompass an additional 36 nations, with Senegal under consideration.

Implications for the Team

According to Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko, the cancellation of the training camp was a necessary action in response to the visa refusals. He stated, “Informed of the refusal to issue visas to multiple members of the national women’s basketball team of Senegal, I gave instruction to the Ministry of Sports to cancel, purely and simply, the ten-day preparation program initially set to be in the United States of America.”

Future Plans

With the U.S. training camp canceled, the Senegalese team will now hold its preparations in Senegal, with a focus on the upcoming Women’s AfroBasket championship—a crucial tournament where Senegal has historically excelled, boasting 11 titles, the most in the event’s history.

International Relations and Support

In light of these challenges, Sonko also extended gratitude towards China, noting the country’s support with financial grants to assist in preparing Senegalese athletes for the Youth Olympic Games scheduled in Dakar for 2026. He remarked, “I would like to express my profound gratitude to the People’s Republic of China, who have agreed to several tens of grants for the preparation of our athletes along with their supervisors.”

U.S. State Department’s Position

The U.S. State Department has refrained from commenting specifically on the visa denials due to confidentiality laws. A spokesperson remarked, “Visa records are confidential under U.S. law; therefore, we cannot comment on individual cases.”

The cancellation of the training camp highlights the complexities surrounding international sports collaboration in the face of evolving travel regulations, while also emphasizing Senegal’s ongoing commitment to supporting its athletes amidst these hurdles.
