Location: McKale Center, Tucson, AZ
The Arizona Wildcats women’s basketball team showcased an outstanding all-around performance, achieving a significant 84-58 victory over Northern Colorado on Tuesday. This win marked the Wildcats’ fifth consecutive success, further solidifying the early season dominance under first-year coach Becky Burke.
Game Highlights
Arizona’s triumph was characterized by notable individual achievements and a cohesive team effort. Key players stepped up, with freshman forward Daniah Trammell leading the scoring with a career-high 22 points, converting 9 of 14 attempts against the Bears’ defensive strategy. Redshirt-freshman guard Kamryn Kitchen contributed 16 points, including four successful three-point shots, also marking a personal best.
Despite leading scorer Mickayla Perdue being limited to just two points in 17 minutes, the team collectively surpassed the 80-point mark for the third consecutive game. Arizona effectively controlled the game by limiting Northern Colorado to 32% shooting while dominating the boards with a 45-33 rebounding advantage.
Defensive Strength & Team Performance
Coach Burke noted the robust performance of her squad, stating, “That’s a really good team. They were 5-1 coming in here. They just beat a team in the Big East at their house (DePaul). That’s the best team we’ve played so far this year, and it was our largest margin of victory.” This display of defensive prowess contrasted sharply with a previous game against Northern Arizona, reflecting the team’s progress.
Freshman wing Mireia Jurado also had a standout night with 12 points and six rebounds, while guard Sumayah Sugapong rounded out the strong performances with four points, ten rebounds, and six assists.
Upcoming Matches
The Wildcats will face Cal State Bakersfield next, with the game scheduled for 6 PM on Saturday. This matchup will be part of a day-night doubleheader at the McKale Center, as the men’s team will also play Norfolk State earlier that day at 2 PM. “I’m all about a good little doubleheader,” complimented Burke, expressing excitement about sharing the game day experience with her colleagues.
