Senator Tuberville Urges California Governor to Safeguard Women’s Sports Ahead of 2028 Olympics
On Thursday, U.S. Senator Tommy Tuberville (R-Auburn) called upon California Governor Gavin Newsom to take action in safeguarding women’s sports as the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles approach.
In a letter addressed to Newsom, Tuberville expressed his approval of the Governor’s recent podcast remarks, where Newsom indicated that he does not believe it is “fair” for men to compete in women’s sports. Tuberville highlighted that this perspective is widely shared, with 79% of Americans, including 67% of Democrats, agreeing on the issue. However, he criticized Senate Democrats for opposing the Protection of Women and Girls Act, which aims to uphold the integrity of women’s sports. Tuberville remarked, “While I would have preferred your comments to have come before the pivotal vote, I commend your courage and hope your colleagues may follow your lead in the future.”
As the nation anticipates the 2028 Summer Olympics, Tuberville emphasized the inclusive spirit of the games, stating that all individuals—regardless of political affiliation, wealth, or gender—unite under the American flag during this global event. “The Olympics celebrate human excellence, diversity, and sportsmanship while also reflecting our core values,” he added. Tuberville urged Newsom, as the Governor of California, to send a strong message about the protection of women’s rights to compete fairly and safely.
Regarding the ongoing debate about transgender athletes, Tuberville stressed the importance of establishing thoughtful, evidence-based policies that ensure fairness while also promoting inclusivity. “This is not about excluding transgender athletes but about safeguarding the rights of female athletes who dedicate their lives to compete and deserve equal opportunities,” he stated.
Tuberville encouraged collaborative efforts between Newsom and the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to develop clear, transparent, and scientifically grounded regulations for the upcoming Games. He expressed concern about potential controversies that could arise, referencing incidents from past Olympic events that raised questions about fairness in competition.
“Women and girls around the world deserve to witness the most talented female athletes thrive, compete, and achieve success,” Tuberville asserted. He raised a critical question: “What message are we sending to our daughters if we encourage them to strive for excellence, only for their rights to be undermined by others?” Tuberville emphasized that women represent half of the population and it is essential to honor and protect their rights as we approach the 2028 Olympics. He concluded his letter with an optimistic statement about working together to restore sanity to women’s sports, reinforcing the belief that women should enjoy the same rights to fair competition as men.
