Encouraging Women in Technology

In an effort to bolster the representation of women in the fields of science and technology, around 60 organizations—including companies, government entities, and various agencies—are opening their doors to female junior and senior high school students in Tokyo this summer.

The initiative aims to address the underrepresentation of women in these crucial disciplines and to inspire younger generations to pursue education in these areas.

Engagement Activities for Students

During these visits, students are given a firsthand look at state-of-the-art technologies and innovations. They have the opportunity to engage directly with female researchers, enriching their understanding of potential career paths.

A notable participant in this initiative is Fujitsu Ltd., an electronics company known for its advancements in technology. In July, Fujitsu hosted approximately 30 female students at its facility located in Kawasaki, Kanagawa Prefecture. The event featured demonstrations of cutting-edge products, such as:

• A quantum computer
• A judging support system for gymnastics performances powered by 3D sensors and artificial intelligence

Impact and Future Directions

This initiative represents a significant step towards encouraging female engagement in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) subjects in Japan. By providing real-world insights and experiences, these programs hope to inspire young women to envision themselves in roles traditionally dominated by men.
