The Alaska Run for Women continues to provide an essential platform for solidarity, strength, and support around critical health issues. The impact of this event extends beyond the day of participation, resonating within the community and inspiring continued advocacy and awareness.

Last year, I completed the full five-mile walk, filled with joy and connection. However, my personal circumstances have shifted dramatically. Health challenges now limit my mobility, making it difficult for me to engage in activities I once took for granted. My experience serves as a reminder of how quickly life can change and how important it is to keep fighting.

For over three decades, I have navigated the complexities of carrying the BRCA1 gene. This journey has involved numerous medical interventions including biopsies, various imaging procedures, and costly medications, with some treatments exceeding $28,000 per month. The maze of insurance paperwork and logistical challenges can feel overwhelming, particularly in moments of vulnerability.

I have faced moments of stark reality during treatments; for instance, while undergoing radiation, I lay on an uncomfortable table, grappling with pain as protocols required precise positioning. The experience can be isolating, magnified by feelings of exposure and helplessness.

Despite these circumstances, I persevere—not out of sheer will, but because I have no alternative. What sustains me is the unwavering support from my loved ones. My caregivers not only manage my treatments; they acknowledge my humanity beyond medical terms. Their efforts to engage personally make the sterile environment of healthcare feel a bit warmer.

Through brief glimpses of my dogs frolicking on the beach, I find solace. These moments lift my spirits, serving as a much-needed reminder that joy can coexist with hardship.

In a recent conversation with my oncology office, the news came that a patient support grant had been approved for my medication, eliminating the monthly financial burden of $28,000. Securing coverage of the deductible, albeit a small victory, reaffirmed my belief in the power of persistence and community support.

I urge everyone to participate in the Alaska Run for Women, whether by running, walking, or simply spreading awareness. Your involvement can make a significant difference—not just for yourself, but for those who are battling illnesses quietly and perhaps unable to join in.

The reality is that this fight can feel lonely, but the Alaska Run for Women symbolizes the unity we can foster in facing such challenges. Together, we send a powerful message: we are not alone.

Carry the torch for those who cannot. Walk for me. Walk for all of us.
