Georgetown Women’s Basketball Defies Preseason Skepticism
Impressive Performances in Early Season Games
The Georgetown College women’s basketball team has begun the season with remarkable performances, demonstrating their ability to compete at a high level despite skepticism in preseason polls. Recent victories against Virginia-Lynchburg (102-46) and Simmons College of Kentucky (114-57) highlighted their strength and teamwork at the Davis-Reid Alumni Gym.
Strong Leadership and New Faces
With a roster that includes nine new players out of eleven, the Tigers are adapting quickly under the guidance of head coach Jeff Nickel. The coach praised the team’s poise and offensive tempo, noting, “We took care of the ball both days, shot it well, and I think that’s kind of our identity.” This identity centers around utilizing speed to penetrate defenses and taking advantage of shooting opportunities.
Kayra Freeman, a key player from last season’s NAIA tournament run, scored 20 points in the first game and 18 in the second, showcasing her essential role as a leader on the team. Nickel mentioned her transition into this leadership position: “She’s taken that well,” referring to Freeman’s significant responsibility as one of the team’s veterans.
Team Performance Highlights
In the game against Simmons, Georgetown’s scoring was led by Daisy Gale, who notched 24 points, while Addesa Miller contributed significantly with 20 points, including six three-pointers. The team achieved an impressive shooting percentage of 55.2%, successfully converting 15 of 32 attempts from beyond the arc. Despite trailing briefly at one point during the game, Georgetown rapidly established a commanding lead, emphasizing their offensive efficiency.
Upcoming Challenges and Opportunities
As the Tigers prepare for their next matches, they aim to maintain this momentum. Their upcoming schedule includes games against Miami-Hamilton and Carolina College, both set to take place at home, offering an excellent opportunity to build on their early success.
The team’s solid kickoff reflects a strong potential for the season ahead, despite being placed lower than competitors such as Bethel and Campbellsville in the preseason rankings. Nickel states that the players are motivated to prove doubters wrong, aiming to cement Georgetown College’s status within the Mid-South Conference.
