Leah Van Dale: Championing Women’s Health Through Experience
Leah Van Dale, widely recognized for her dynamic twelve-year career with WWE, transformed the landscape for female wrestlers and became a role model for aspiring athletes. Entering a male-dominated arena without traditional wrestling experience, she navigated her journey with determination, stepping into the role of Carmella during an era when women’s wrestling was evolving.
The Rise to Stardom
Born with a passion for performance, Van Dale’s journey began with dance. “As a young girl, I was obsessed with dance,” she shares, outlining her early start at the age of three in various styles such as tap, jazz, and ballet. This passion led her to the NFL and the NBA, where she danced for the Los Angeles Lakers. It was during this time that a dance agent encouraged her to audition for WWE.
Her debut coincided with a significant shift in women’s wrestling, allowing her to showcase her unique hip-hop style and strong persona on a global stage. “I just fell in love with it,” she recounts, emphasizing the joy she found in athleticism, character creation, and performance.
Challenges Beyond the Ring
While thriving in front of thousands, Van Dale faced personal hardships that remained largely unspoken in the wrestling community. She experienced profound struggles with pregnancy loss and the challenges of postpartum recovery. “We were on the road five days a week, 52 weeks a year,” she reflects, highlighting the difficulty of balancing motherhood with her wrestling career.
Her experiences included back-to-back miscarriages, including an ectopic pregnancy, which brought feelings of isolation and shame. “I almost felt shame, like what did I do wrong?” she expressed. Despite the difficulties, these moments sparked her desire to create a dialogue around women’s health issues.
Breaking the Silence
Recognizing the lack of candid conversations regarding fertility challenges, Van Dale publicly shared her story in hopes of breaking the stigma. “If I’m going through this, other women must be too,” she realized. Her decision to open up resonated with many; it catalyzed discussions that many women desperately needed. “I felt really proud that I was able to open the door for conversations with other women,” she noted.
Transitioning into Motherhood and New Ventures
Following the birth of her son in November 2023, Van Dale faced an unexpected setback due to a birth injury that led to complications requiring her to rethink her wrestling career. After a 12-year tenure, her contract with WWE was not renewed, a decision she connected to her recent life changes.
This turning point fueled her ambition for a new endeavor: Snatch, a women’s health and wellness platform aimed at promoting community and open dialogue about fertility, motherhood, and related issues. “Two things can be true: you can love your baby and still mourn your old life,” she argues, emphasizing the necessity for honest conversations.
Empowering Women Through Community
Snatch aims to be a platform where women can openly discuss their experiences. “It was all these little moments… that made me think, why are we not talking about this?” Van Dale stated, as she integrated her experiences into a program that is both informative and community-oriented. Members access affordable resources, including forums and essential courses aimed at supporting women during significant life changes.
Her vision for Snatch goes beyond typical health resources. “People come for the information, but they stay for the community,” she remarks, highlighting her dedication to making expert-backed advice accessible.
Embracing a New Identity
Van Dale has embraced her evolving identity, realizing that she can amplify her voice. “Finally, I can use my voice,” she reflects. The name ‘Snatch’ itself signifies boldness and aims to destigmatize discussions surrounding women’s health. “I want women to feel like they can talk about the things we’re not supposed to,” she explains.
Her advice to the younger generation is clear: “Don’t be afraid to challenge the system. The squeaky wheel gets the grease,” she asserts, encouraging women to stand up and advocate for their needs.
Now at 37, Leah Van Dale stands as a testament to resilience, using her platform to ensure that no woman feels undervalued or unheard. “I want to make sure no other woman feels that way,” she concludes, solidifying her commitment to empowering women in their health journeys.
