TGL Explores Expansion: New Teams and a Women’s League in Focus
Current Developments
The TGL is actively pursuing opportunities for expansion, especially looking into the creation of a women’s version of its innovative golf league. During a recent panel discussion at the CAA World Congress of Sports, TMRW Sports co-founder and CEO Mike McCarley highlighted the progress being made. While specifics have yet to be finalized, McCarley expressed optimism regarding the substantial interest from potential team bidders. “I’ve been pleasantly surprised by the number of interested parties,” he noted, suggesting that the league will likely start by introducing one new team and expand thereafter.
Insights from Industry Leaders
On stage with McCarley was Alexis Ohanian, founder of Seven Seven Six and co-founder of Angel City FC, who emphasized the importance of including women in the league’s future. Ohanian remarked, “Part of my original pitch for owning a stake in TGL was to ensure that we would eventually expand to include women.” He mentioned his ongoing discussions about an LPGA partnership, underscoring the league’s genuine interest in this area.
McCarley confirmed, “There’s no secret we’re working on that. Alexis has been a great thought leader for us on that, and I think most of our team owners are right behind them in that area, too.”
Financial Dynamics and Market Potential
Other panelists included Don Cornwell, CEO of Dynasty Equity, an early investor in TMRW Sports, and Rosalyn Durant, EVP of Programming and Acquisitions at ESPN, TGL’s broadcasting rights partner. Cornwell shared his belief that the betting markets surrounding the sport will significantly enhance in the second year, providing a potential boost to the league’s growth. Meanwhile, Durant remarked that while the current television coverage has been satisfactory, there is always room for improvement.
The Unique Challenge of Brand Building
Ohanian highlighted the “asset-light” nature of franchise ownership in TGL, noting that it does not necessitate a dedicated home course or training facilities. He anticipates that the L.A. Golf Club will achieve profitability within its second year of operation. “Building a team brand is a unique proposition in golf, where players historically compete as individuals,” he explained. Ohanian shared an insightful analogy from his early days with Reddit: “Two years after starting Reddit, I saw someone with a tattoo of its alien, and that made me realize we were probably onto something.”
He concluded with an optimistic perspective on brand loyalty, stating, “We knew the individual athletes had huge followings. We believed in the format, but could we actually create a brand that someone might one day want a tattoo of?”
