Recent legislation in Tennessee has raised significant concerns among small business owners, particularly those owned by women and minorities. The new law, known as HB 0923 or the Dismantling DEI Departments Act, prohibits government agencies and public institutions from establishing offices aimed at enhancing diversity, equity, or inclusion.

The law took effect earlier this month, prompting immediate reactions from business communities in Memphis and beyond. Many entrepreneurs are now faced with the daunting task of adapting their strategies, rebranding, or even ceasing operations due to diminished support for minority-owned businesses.

Colby Midgett, owner of Premier Flowers, a woman and minority-owned floral shop with a decade of service in Memphis, is contemplating a shift from retail to freelance work. Midgett cited changing economic conditions and recent cuts in business support as influencing factors for her decision.

“Not entirely, but kind of transition more to studio work and focus more on corporate events, and more of a personalized service is because of the change in the economy,” she explained.

Daniel Watson, owner of Beneva Mayweather Foods, shares similar sentiments. Having previously benefited from governmental programs designed to assist minority-owned businesses, Watson commented on the additional challenges that the new law presents. “The further we go into this cycle, I’m sure I will reap some repercussions of that as it relates to applying for funding,” he said, emphasizing the importance of DEI initiatives in ensuring equitable business opportunities.

Watson further remarked, “To think DEI’s not necessary, and we’re in a world that’s equal and balanced, that’s come on…you’re playing with my intelligence.”

Despite these challenges, Midgett expresses optimism regarding the future of her business. She remains committed to her mission as a full-service florist, highlighting the vital role community support plays in her operations. Midgett mentioned that while her business model may look different moving forward, her determination to succeed remains steadfast.
