PROVO, Utah – The ITA Mountain Regionals hosted by BYU kicked off on Tuesday, marking the first step in a significant journey for Colorado State’s tennis team. The opening day introduced both the doubles and qualifying brackets for singles competition.
Doubles Success on Day One
The Rams made a strong start in doubles, achieving two victories. Luana Avelar and Sorcha Caves formed an effective partnership, defeating their opponents from Idaho State with a score of 8-4. Freshmen Leyla Tozin and Dylan Voeks also advanced, securing their win against a duo from Boise State with a close 8-6 result.
Challenging Singles Qualifying Matches
In the singles qualifying round, all four matches involving Rams extended to three sets. Notably, three of these matches required tiebreakers to determine the winners. Among them, Tozin was the only CSU player to progress through the first round, overcoming Utah State’s Magdalena Nunez Pureco with a scoreline of 4-6, 7-6 (5), 7-5. However, she was unable to reach the next round after facing Emmy Richards from Utah State.
What’s Next for the Rams
Competitive play will continue on Wednesday at 8 a.m. with two rounds of doubles and the debut of the main singles draw featuring Avelar and Caves. The Rams who did not win in the qualifying stage are expected to engage in consolation matches after the day’s main events.
