UNC Women’s Basketball Dominates A&T with 85-50 Victory
In a lopsided contest at Corbett Sports Center, the University of North Carolina (UNC) women’s basketball team secured an 85-50 victory over North Carolina A&T. This game marks the Tar Heels’ second consecutive win at this venue and highlights their formidable presence in women’s collegiate basketball.
Coaches Reflect on the Game
Following the match, Courtney Banghart, head coach of the 14th-ranked Tar Heels, emphasized the significance of the vibrant A&T crowd. She noted that while UNC boasts a national fanbase, the atmosphere at Corbett uniquely positioned her team as the away side. “If we’re going to go on the road, we want to have a great environment that we can learn from,” Banghart said. She acknowledged that not every university could match A&T’s passionate support, adding that the crowd’s intensity made it challenging for her to coach effectively during the game.
On the other side, Tarrell Robinson, A&T’s head coach and the most successful in the program’s history, called upon fans to continue their support, particularly as the Aggies aim for their second consecutive Coastal Athletic Association (CAA) regular-season title. “Our fans get to see there’s not much of a difference in the brand of basketball,” Robinson stated, highlighting the improved caliber of play and encouraging attendance as the team progresses through the season.
Game Highlights
The Aggies entered the match with spirited resolve, leveraging their strong inside play from fifth-year player Chaniya Clark and freshman Anaya Karriem. Despite trailing 14-8 at the end of the first quarter, the Aggies showcased their potential. Their strategy initially neutralized UNC’s inside game, compelling the Tar Heels to extend their shooting range. In the second quarter, UNC swiftly made four three-pointers, establishing a commanding 28-16 lead.
Cierra Toomey, standing at 6-foot-4, contributed significantly in the post, scoring multiple baskets, while teammate Indya Nivar extended the lead effectively, pushing the score to 34-16. By halftime, UNC had managed to widen the gap to 43-21, aided by three additional three-pointers in the closing minutes of the half.
Player Performances
Robinson acknowledged the Tar Heels’ superior talent and execution, noting their status as a Top 25 program. He praised his players for their intense effort and competitive spirit. On an individual level, Clark was a standout for the Aggies, finishing with 14 points and seven rebounds, while Karriem added 11 points and seven rebounds. For UNC, Nivar led the game with 14 points, alongside recording 10 rebounds and contributing defensively with two blocks and two steals.
Next Steps for Both Teams
Looking ahead, A&T fans will have the opportunity to support their team again on Saturday, December 6, when they host Norfolk State at Corbett Sports Center, with tip-off scheduled for noon. Before this matchup, the Aggies will travel to Durham, North Carolina, to face archrival North Carolina Central University on Tuesday, December 2, at 6:30 p.m.
