A 28-year-old Chinese PhD student, Zhenhao Zou, has been convicted of multiple counts of drugging and raping women in both London and China. His case has raised serious concerns, as authorities believe that he may have targeted many more victims beyond the ten confirmed cases.
During a recent sentencing session at the Inner London Crown Court, the harrowing experiences of three identified victims were shared through their impact statements. One woman recounted a chilling incident in May 2023, where Zou coerced her into consuming excessive alcohol and subsequently assaulted her in his Elephant and Castle flat. She expressed the profound effects of the trauma, stating, “I cannot determine how long this incident will affect me, but I know that the impact has deeply affected my personality.” The feeling of guilt and confusion has lingered, as she grapples with the horror of the assault and its ramifications on her trust in others.
A second victim, assaulted in October 2021 at Zou’s student residence near Russell Square, described her profound sense of helplessness during the attack. In her statement, she described a moment of awakening amidst the assault, asserting, “he was thrusting violently against my body.” She conveyed an ongoing psychological distress, saying that the memory of Zou’s face during the attack is permanently etched in her mind.
A third victim, referred to as Female D, conveyed her struggles with shame and self-blame in her statement, indicating that she is haunted by nightmares of her traumatic experience with Zou. Derek’s heinous actions extend beyond these three cases, prompting over 20 other women to reach out to law enforcement, fearing they may have also fallen victim to his predatory behavior.
Zou’s crimes, which span from September 2019 to May 2023, include 11 counts of rape, multiple counts of voyeurism, and the possession of illegal substances for committing sexual offenses. Prosecutors characterized him as deceptive, portraying himself as a charming individual while being a persistent sexual predator. His wealthy background provided him with a lifestyle that included expensive clothing and luxury items, further masking his criminal behavior.
Originally from a well-off family in China, Zou initially studied mechanical engineering at Queen’s University in Belfast before moving to London for his master’s and PhD programs at UCL. His predatory behavior came to light following a report in November 2023 from a victim who alleged an assault. Investigations revealed disturbing content on Zou’s phone, including videos of rapes and drug paraphernalia in his living space.
As the case progresses, Judge Rosina Cottage indicated that Zou, deemed dangerous, will face a lengthy prison sentence. The far-reaching impact of his actions on the victims highlights the urgent need for awareness and intervention regarding sexual violence.
