The Sunshine Coast Lightning Transitions to New Ownership
Change in Leadership
Australia’s sole regional club in the Super Netball, the Sunshine Coast Lightning, is undergoing a change in ownership. Established in 2016 through a collaboration between the Melbourne Storm NRL club and the University of the Sunshine Coast, the Lightning has enjoyed remarkable success in its nearly decade-long existence.
Success in the League
Since its inception, the Lightning has emerged as one of Australia’s top women’s sporting franchises, clinching back-to-back premierships in 2017 and 2018. Throughout the past nine seasons, they have consistently showcased their competitive spirit, reaching the finals in six of those years.
New Owners
The Melbourne Storm and the University of the Sunshine Coast will step back from operational roles as the Global Sports Fund Management Group takes over as licensee effective October 1.
“We are committed to investing in women’s sport, building deeper connections with fans and partners, and ensuring the Lightning remains a source of pride for this region for many years to come,” said Lee Hagipantelis, co-owner of the new management group.
Focus on Rugby League
Justin Rodski, chief executive of the Melbourne Storm, emphasized the organization’s need to concentrate on its core rugby league responsibilities. “This move will now allow the club to focus on rugby league in our home of Victoria,” he added, reflecting on the importance of nurturing upcoming talent in both men’s and women’s games.
Future Developments
The Global Sports Fund Management Group aims to enhance the club further. They have expressed a strong commitment to evolving the Lightning into an elite team while ensuring a captivating experience for fans. Their plan includes recruiting skilled players and experienced coaching staff, as well as improving brand identity.
Community Engagement
Mr. Rodski acknowledged the enthusiastic support of Lightning fans over the years, highlighting the club’s significant impact on the community through initiatives like family days and school clinics aimed at encouraging youth participation in netball.
Looking Ahead
Netball Australia chief Stacey West welcomed the new ownership, expressing optimism about the future for the Lightning. “The Lightning are going to go from strength to strength,” she stated, referring to the club’s potential in the Suncorp Super Netball League, which has recently seen record-breaking attendance and viewership.
