Schreiner University Expands Women’s Athletics with New Programs
Schreiner University has announced a significant expansion of its women’s athletic programs, introducing Women’s Flag Football, Women’s Beach Volleyball, and Women’s Swimming. This initiative not only aligns with the university’s strategic goals of promoting equitable athletics but also enriches the overall student experience both in and out of the athletic arena.
A Strategic Advancement in Athletics
This announcement comes on the heels of the eagerly anticipated launch of Schreiner Football, positioning the Mountaineers as pioneers in NCAA Division III sports innovation. “What an exciting time for Schreiner University,” stated Bill Raleigh, the athletic director. “We are establishing three new sports for women, marking a vital step in our commitment to inclusive growth in athletics at the NCAA Division III level.”
New Opportunities in Women’s Sports
The addition of these new programs is particularly significant as Women’s Flag Football and Beach Volleyball are gaining traction at the NCAA level. Schreiner will join fellow institutions in the American Southwest Conference (ASC), providing student-athletes with opportunities to compete for both conference and national titles. The NFL’s endorsement of Women’s Flag Football and its anticipated inclusion as an Olympic sport in the 2028 Games further enhances the visibility and appeal of this new program.
Beach Volleyball and Swimming Programs
Schreiner University will also be the fifth institution in the ASC to introduce women’s beach volleyball, broadening competitive avenues for student-athletes. Additionally, the swimming team will utilize the Olympic outdoor pool owned by the City of Kerrville for training and competition. This initiative underscores the already strong partnership between the university and the local community.
Support for Student-Athletes
“The recent growth in popularity of Beach Volleyball and Flag Football at the high school and youth levels is promising,” Raleigh added. “This will help ensure a recruitment pipeline as these sports launch. Meanwhile, Women’s Swimming is a well-established NCAA sport, and our collaboration with the city of Kerrville will significantly contribute to its success.”
Looking Ahead
Competition for all three sports is expected to begin in Fall 2026. Currently, Schreiner University is in the process of seeking head coaches for each of the programs, with announcements anticipated soon. “We are excited to continue to provide student-athletes with opportunities to compete at the collegiate level,” said Dr. Goodwyn, Vice President of Student Affairs and Dean of Students. “The inclusion of these sports further reflects our commitment to enhancing the holistic educational experience for our students.”
This expansion of women’s athletics at Schreiner not only illustrates the university’s dedication to fostering a diverse athletic environment but also opens doors for numerous students to engage in competitive sports, enriching their overall college experience.
