Sterling Heights Man Charged with Human Trafficking
OAKLAND COUNTY, Mich. – Authorities have filed charges against a 39-year-old man from Sterling Heights for alleged involvement in a human trafficking operation.
Details of the Charges
Jacob Michael Nelson is accused of coercing a woman into engaging in sexual acts with clients he connected with online, all in exchange for monetary compensation. Prosecutors detailed that the victim was drugged with substances such as Adderall and methamphetamine to force her compliance and sustain her ability to serve more clients.
If the woman resisted or refused to participate in sex work, she reportedly faced physical violence.
Legal Implications
Nelson is facing multiple serious charges, including:
- Conducting a human trafficking enterprise: This charge carries a potential sentence of up to 15 years in prison.
- Accepting earnings from prostitution: This could lead to a sentence of up to 20 years.
- Transporting a person for the purposes of prostitution: This charge is also punishable by up to 20 years in prison.
Prosecutorial Commitment to Combat Trafficking
Oakland County Prosecutor Karen McDonald emphasized the ongoing efforts to combat human trafficking during her tenure, stating, “Human trafficking festered for too long in our communities. From my first day in office, we’ve made battling trafficking a priority. The results are clear: Traffickers are being held accountable in Oakland County, and victims are getting help to escape cycles of abuse and manipulation.”
This case marks the 34th human trafficking case brought to light by McDonald’s office since specialized training was initiated in November 2024. Since forming a dedicated human trafficking unit in 2021, there have been a total of 73 cases, a stark contrast to just five cases charged in the nine years prior to the establishment of the unit.
