Texas Tech Women’s Tennis Concludes Season in NCAA Tournament
The Texas Tech women’s tennis team saw their season come to an end on Saturday afternoon, as they faced Stanford University in the NCAA Tournament round of 32, losing 4-1 at the McLeod Center.
Challenging Start for Tech
The Lady Raiders began the match on a difficult note, struggling to find their rhythm on the courts. They lost the doubles point for the first time since March 14, which set the tone for the remainder of the competition. Following this, Tech faced consecutive losses in singles matches, putting them at a significant disadvantage early on.
Key Performances
Despite being down 3-0, sophomore Jermine Sherif managed to secure a victory in her singles match. However, hopes for a comeback were dashed when Stanford freshman Valerie Glozman clinched the match with a win over junior Yekaterina Dmitrichenko, executing a commanding performance in straight sets.
Glozman, who had earlier taken the first set in a tiebreaker, decisively concluded the match with a strong showing in the final set, allowing only a single point to Dmitrichenko.
Doubles Matches Outcome
The doubles competition also contributed to Texas Tech’s struggles. The duo of senior Avelina Sayfetdinova and junior Mariia Hlahola, ranked as the No. 8 ITA doubles team, faced early termination at 6-4, as they were unable to turn the tide in their favor.
In a similar vein, junior Caroline Driscoll of Stanford dominated her match against Hlahola, further extending Stanford’s lead with another straight-set victory. Senior Connie Ma added to Tech’s challenges, defeating Sayfetdinova in two sets, concluding with scores of 6-1.
Reflecting on the Season
Despite the outcome of this match, the Lady Raiders finished their season with a commendable record of 23-3, bolstered by two Big 12 titles. The team demonstrated resilience and achievement throughout the season, showcasing their capabilities on the court.
This loss marks a bitter conclusion for Texas Tech, who now looks to regroup and prepare for the upcoming season with hopes of building on their success.
