Stalin Addresses Criticisms from Tamil Nadu Governor
Background of the Controversy
The Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, M.K. Stalin, has publicly responded to comments made by Governor R.N. Ravi during his Independence Day address, in which the governor raised concerns over various social issues including women’s safety and drug abuse in the state.
Tamil Nadu’s Social Indices Highlighted
In his response, Stalin defended Tamil Nadu’s status as a leading Indian state, citing statistics from the Union BJP government which reveal that Tamil Nadu outperforms several BJP-ruled states in various social indices. Notably, he emphasized that Tamil Nadu ranks second nationally in school education.
Addressing the governor’s comments on women’s safety, Stalin pointed to data from the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) for 2022, asserting that Uttar Pradesh, a state governed by the BJP, records the highest number of crimes against women. He argued this should redirect the focus of criticisms toward BJP-ruled states.
Stalin’s Stance on Governance
Stalin expressed that the governor’s comments reflect a political agenda rather than genuine concern, stating, “The Union BJP government is carrying out its cheap politics through the Governor who is constantly functioning against Tamil, Tamil Nadu, its people and feelings.” He added, “Let him talk, I am not bothered,” emphasizing his commitment to the people of Tamil Nadu who voted for his administration.
Moreover, he acknowledged the effectiveness of recent public outreach initiatives, such as “Ungaludan Stalin,” “Nalan Kakkum Stalin,” and “Thayumanavar Scheme,” asserting that the beneficiaries of these programs are the true ambassadors who promote their success.
