St. Joseph Mustangs Celebrate Women in Sports

On June 12th, the St. Joseph Mustangs hosted a special night dedicated to “Women in Sports” during one of their home games. The event was organized to honor local female athletes and promote the importance of women in athletics.
Recognition of Local Sports Icons
Among those honored was Terin Humphrey, a native of St. Joseph and a silver medalist in gymnastics at the 2004 Olympics. Her achievements highlight the significant contributions women make in sports at both local and national levels.
Additionally, Missouri Western’s Makenzie Garr, a talented shot put athlete and state champion from Central High School, threw the ceremonial first pitch. Garr expressed her pride in representing her hometown:
“I’m glad I grew up here. I’m glad I get to represent the city of St. Joe, from going Central to Missouri Western.”
The Importance of Track and Field in Education
Garr shared her enthusiasm for track and field following its reinstatement at Missouri Western, where she plans to continue her athletic journey:
“Honestly, it was an emotional time all over the place. I was so upset when they cut the program. I tried to transfer but then two weeks later they said everything was reinstated. I was so happy because I did not want to transfer; I just wanted to stay home and go to school at Missouri Western.”
