Spain Secures Perfect Group Stage at UEFA Women’s European Championship
On July 11, 2025, Spain showcased their dominance in the UEFA Women’s European Championship by defeating Italy 3–1, concluding the group stage with an impeccable record of three wins.
Despite an early setback, La Roja demonstrated remarkable resilience, skill, and precision in their gameplay, ultimately topping Group B.
Spain Rallies After Early Setback
The match began on a challenging note for Spain when Italy’s Elisabetta Oliviero scored in the 10th minute following a lapse in the Spanish defense. However, Spain quickly rebounded. Athenea del Castillo netted the equalizer just four minutes later, utilizing a clever backheel from teammate Alexia Putellas.
Midfield Mastery Seals the Victory
In the second half, Spain’s midfield effectively took control, leading to a decisive moment when Patri Guijarro scored in the 49th minute after excellent work from Del Castillo. The trio of Guijarro, Aitana Bonmatí, and Putellas skillfully disrupted Italy’s momentum throughout the second half.
Putellas’ Stellar Performance
Alexia Putellas continued to shine, providing assists for both the equalizing and the final goals scored by Del Castillo and Esther González, respectively. This victory marked the Barcelona midfielder’s fourth goal of the tournament and also allowed her to match Beth Mead’s record for the most goal contributions in the group stage of a European Championship, tallying seven.
Looking Ahead
With this win, Spain topped Group B and will face Switzerland in the quarter-finals on July 18. Italy, despite the loss, advanced as the group’s runners-up and will take on Norway on July 16.
