Southeastern Louisiana University Women’s Basketball Welcomes Ross Rix as Associate Head Coach
HAMMOND, LA — The Southeastern Louisiana University (SLU) women’s basketball team is set to embark on a new chapter as first-year head coach Jeff Dow has announced Ross Rix’s addition to the coaching staff. Rix will serve as the associate head coach for the upcoming 2025-26 season, pending approval from the University of Louisiana System’s Board of Supervisors.
Coaching Experience and Background
With nearly two decades of coaching experience, Rix brings a wealth of knowledge and leadership to the Lady Lions. His most recent role was as head boys basketball coach at Northside High School in Lafayette, Louisiana. Under his guidance, the teams have seen significant successes, including leading JS Clark Leadership Academy’s girls’ program to a State Championship in 2024.
“I’m excited about the staff that we were able to assemble as we begin the process of essentially building this program from scratch,” stated Dow. “I think it is a staff that will be cohesive and will commit to developing our student-athletes on and off the court.”
Previous Roles and Achievements
Prior to his time at Northside, Rix held various positions in both high school and college basketball. He served as the athletic director while doubling as head coach for both boys’ and girls’ basketball at JS Clark Leadership Academy. His coaching proficiency also extends to collegiate experience, including a season as an assistant coach with the men’s basketball program at Bethune-Cookman University in Florida, and a graduate assistant role at Western Kentucky University.
Rix’s high school coaching journey includes notable stints at Northwest High in Opelousas and Catholic High in New Iberia, providing him with a deep understanding of the game at multiple levels. He achieved a commendable record of 35-21 during his tenure in New Iberia and reached the state quarterfinals in 2018 with Northside High, illustrating his capability to build competitive teams.
Educational Background
Rix earned his bachelor’s degree from the University of Louisiana at Lafayette in 2009 and went on to complete a Master’s degree in Recreation and Sport Administration at Western Kentucky University in 2019. This educational foundation complements his extensive coaching background, preparing him well for his new role.
Upcoming Season Outlook
The SLU women’s basketball team is poised to open its 2025-26 season with an exhibition match against Millsaps on October 28, followed by the season opener against Centenary on November 3 at the University Center. With Rix joining the coaching staff, the Lady Lions are eager to uphold their tradition of excellence in the Southland Conference.
