Women’s Sports at Stephen F. Austin University Temporarily Reinstated
Date: October 2023
Judicial Interim Order
A recent ruling by a Texas judge has led to a temporary injunction that requires Stephen F. Austin University (SFA) to reinstate several women’s athletics programs. The injunction specifically preserves the women’s beach volleyball, bowling, and golf teams, along with all other women’s varsity sports while legal proceedings are underway.
University’s Response
In a formal statement, SFA acknowledged the court’s decision but indicated plans to appeal the ruling to the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals. The university expressed gratitude to Judge Michael Truncale for his consideration during the hearings.
SFA articulated its stance, stating, “We remain confident in the legality and rationale behind our decision to reduce the number of sports we sponsor.” The university emphasized that their decision was primarily driven by economic factors rather than gender-based discrimination, asserting compliance with Title IX regulations.
Context of the Legal Battle
The dispute arises from a lawsuit filed by six senior female athletes challenging the university’s decision to cut certain women’s sports as part of broader cost-cutting measures. A hearing was conducted recently to determine whether SFA would need to reinstate these teams temporarily until the lawsuit’s resolution.
SFA pointed out that, prior to the reductions, only the University of Texas at Austin and Texas A&M University—both operating with significantly larger athletics budgets—sponsored more NCAA Division I sports among public universities in Texas.
Commitment to Women’s Athletics
The university reaffirmed its dedication to promoting women’s sports, boasting a legacy of advocacy in this area. Currently, SFA offers a total of 16 athletic programs, which include eight NCAA women’s teams and six men’s teams, alongside two primarily female cheer and dance squads.
SFA concluded its statement by expressing eagerness to present the merits of its position as the legal process unfolds.
