Senegal Women’s Basketball Team Shifts Training Plans Due to Visa Issues
The Senegal women’s national basketball team has canceled its planned training camp in the United States following visa denials for multiple team members. The team was set to be in the U.S. for a ten-day preparatory program ahead of the AfroBasket tournament in Ivory Coast.
Team’s New Training Location
In light of the visa issues, Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko announced via social media that the training camp would now take place in Dakar, Senegal’s capital. He described the local setting as “sovereign and conducive” for the team’s preparations.
Details on Visa Denials
According to a statement from Senegal’s basketball federation, the visa applications of five players and seven officials were not approved. The specific reasons for the denials remain unclear; however, they align with stricter visa vetting processes implemented by the U.S. government.
Upcoming AfroBasket Tournament
Scheduled from June 22 to July 3, the team was preparing for the AfroBasket championship, which is significant in the African basketball landscape. Senegal has a distinguished record, having earned first or second place in four of the last five championships, resulting in a total of eleven titles.
Implications for International Competitions
The AfroBasket tournament also serves as a qualification event for the FIBA World Cup, which is set to occur next year in Germany. The outcome of this tournament will be pivotal for African teams aiming for global competition.
